love poem to girlfriend

i love the little tiny hairs
on your neck
and i love the way that you giggle
when they touch my lips

and the smell of the place
behind your ear
is absolute insanity
inside my brain

being your lover
is electric
and soft and delicate

and your toes taste
absolutely amazing

you are beautiful

so perfectly human
you walk amongst mere mortals
like an angel
surrounded by light
and clothed in white feathers
and gold

you smile
and everything is alive

even your name
makes me think
what is love?
and how it moves me
like a puppet

and how can it be true
that you own me completely
and you don’t even know

unrequited love

once i fell in love
with a mirage
a reflection
so beautiful
she held me in awe

you see,
life moves on
and she is not a statue
or a painting
to be admired

she is a woman,
a person.
and her neck is as graceful as an alabaster cliff
and her hair falls in spinning rivulets
and she moves like a mixture of summer and laughter
and i’m sure there are angels that follow her everywhere she goes

so i can’t look at her
she’s too miraculous
too amazing

and i’m not sure it’s really love
but it’s something like it

love is awesome

it’s totally amazing
unless it’s not
then again, it might be awesome later

sometimes it’s awesome for a little while
then not so awesome
and then it gets better
then it’s not so good again
then it gets much better
then you decide to find someone
that isn’t so much of a roller coaster ride

teenage love

all sparks and flash
smells and stickiness
finding and losing

then it’s flowers in a meadow
dancing alone
cloud watching
wandering around at the mall
drawing with crayons
cooking in your underwear
laughing at nothing
being crazy
falling asleep
waiting for something
remembering to feed the dog

and then you have to go to college and figure out what the new game is all about.

love is a miracle

like the sun
or a flower
or a rainbow
or the sound of beautiful music

like the magic of life
it exists
and science can “explain” it
yet it’s still beyond true comprehension

a mystery
an enigma

a question that only your soul can answer

nothing makes sense

it’s like a sweet insanity
when we’re together

we’re both crazy
and nothing makes sense
yet everything is perfect

and i just want to see you smile
and hear your laugh

building love

every day
we work together
towards our mutual goal

a life
where we live
surrounded with the love
that we’ve built
for ourselves

every step
brings us closer
to the life that we want

sitting on the beach
at sunset
holding hands
with a bottle of merlot
and a small fire
to keep us warm

wicked love

she’s twisted
i can’t figure her out

she’s different
it doesn’t make sense

as if she’s a kitten
and my soul is her toy
with her tiny little claws and teeth
so vicious

so silly and fun

and worth it

love on rye, hold the mayo

yeah, i’ll take a couple of slices
of the good love
that kind, right there.
cut it nice and thick
stack it on there, for real
with stone ground mustard
and some of that home-made slaw

wrap it in paper and a side of fries
a little garlic salt
malt vinegar

maybe i’ll save it for later

or eat half now while i wait
and enjoy the rest for lunch at work
